Proper cushion makes carpeting more comfortable underfoot, provides insulation and noise reduction and most importantly prolongs carpet life. Much attention and energy is devoted to selecting carpet, but pad is a crucial part of your flooring and should not be forgotten. Don’t go cheap because it is hidden- think of it as insurance that will protect your investment.
Cushion comes in various densities and thicknesses, ranging from ¼ inch to 7/16 inch. The Carpet and Rug Institute recommends a maximum thickness of 7/16” for cut pile residential carpet cushion and 3/8” or less under low-pile carpet, such as Berber or commercial carpet. When evaluating quality, look for denser cushion, rather than thicker cushion.
