When the owner of the Dusky Thrush residence purchased the plot of her Westlake home, she saw nothing but potential. The original structure was small and dated, and she was looking to upgrade in both size and style—so she tore it down and built her dream home from the ground up. Urbane Design was hired to design the home with the goal of creating a comfortable, modern space for the client’s family.

The client’s style is contemporary with an eclectic flair. She gravitates towards sleek, timeless finishes that serve as a stage for her vintage pieces that are full of character and color. She is also conscious of her family’s lifestyle and sought kid-friendly finishes and space planning. Considering this, we opted for durable, sealed concrete floors in the downstairs area. The kitchen is complete with timeless walnut cabinets accented by a sleek quartz backsplash, quartz countertops and a waterfall island—all materials that are long lasting and easy to clean, which is a must with young twins.

Upstairs, we chose white oak floors, easy-to-care-for porcelain and glass tile accents, and custom colors to match each child’s personality in their private spaces. Each piece of furniture was chosen for its durable fabrics and strong, solid wood frames.

A standout feature in this home is the laundry room. We chose a vibrant royal blue for the cabinets and framed the kids’ artwork throughout. Simple touches like this turned a room that is typically utilized for chores into an unexpectedly special space filled with family memories.

The design of this home has continued to foster the growth of the client’s family by providing comfortable, personalized places for each member to rest, work and play. Not to mention, the home is perfect for hosting; guests are able to move with ease from room to room, setting the stage for unforgettable gatherings.
