In the quaint Travis Heights neighborhood of Austin sits this bungalow; a cozy four bedroom, three bathroom home that was originally half the size. The owners of this home loved the original architecture and curb appeal, but needed more space for their family to grow. Urbane Design was hired to assist with design during the home’s additions, including two bedrooms, two bathrooms, a secondary living space and work space and a second floor exterior deck.

The owners of the Travis Heights Addition enjoy clean, polished interior design with boho touches full of details and personality. A stunning feature in the home is the guest bathroom. Our team was tasked with transforming this small space without tearing down any walls—meaning our design choices needed to give the illusion of more space without actually expanding it. We chose an imported cement tile with bold black and white diamond patterns. Each tile was laid to perfectly extend from wall to floor, blurring the boundary line between the two. We wanted the tiles to be the visual focal point of the room, so we kept finishes simple with a matte black light fixture, shower handle, bath spout and matte black cabinet pulls. A wooden live edge shelf was installed to add warmth and functionality.

The addition needed to blend seamlessly with the rest of the home. We chose the same flooring as in the main living areas. We also built a desk out of soapstone to match the kitchen countertops. The addition’s bathroom features simple, elegant tile selections with marble countertops.

The Travis Heights Addition is a harmonious blend of old and new. By working closely with the client, we were able to increase the square footage of their home while maintaining the integrity of their original design— helping family members and guests alike flow seamlessly between spaces. The home also gives our client’s growing family of four plenty of room to make memories for years to come.
