Define Your Style: Casual 101

Comfortably informal, warm and inviting completely describe casual style.  Casual homes use simple details, plush upholstery, textured fabrics, low luster surfaces and natural materials.

People are generally selective about what they bring into their homes and will only settle for well made furniture with clean lines, such as Shaker or Mission style pieces.  Furniture pieces are often long, large and horizontal, opposed to vertical, tall and petite.  Tables are chunky and oversized, which adds to the feeling of comfort, often provides storage and room for spreading out.  One might also find wicker, iron, rattan, flea market finds and/or old antiques in a casual home.  Another important factor is comfort and ease of maintenance.

Oversized upholstery pieces may be covered in chenille, microfiber, cotton, linen or wool and feature textured pillows, as opposed to high sheen fabrics.  A neutral color palette may dominate, popular colors include, tan, gray, beige and off white.  Other colors are integrated as well.  Soft pastels add a serene feeling, while darker tones such as navy, rust, olive, wine and cranberry are used for a pop of color.
